City of Portage · Bandshell

Located in Portage's Central Park, this bandshell needed to both create an identity and presence in the park while not obstructing the views of the backdrop surroundings. Located on the site to maximize spectator seating while giving consideration to evening sun problems for audience and performers, the bandshell ended up on the site with the adjacent wetlands and Portage Creek behind the shell. Desires to maintain the views led to the "open-back", airy design of the space frame on concrete columns. Colors and materials were chosen to afford the desired identity while complementing the natural colors of the site. The platform is flat to accommodate all types of performances, but was raised above the existing grades to make spectator viewing comfortable and lift the performance area above the flood plain of the creek.
